What if I said to you that the perfect representation of America was not a melting pot or baseball and apple pie, but rather a website?
If you love, or even vaguely like America, you're probably hoping that I'm going to say Google is the website, or maybe Facebook, something useful and accepted as good. Sorry to say, but America is MyFreeImplants. Hurrah!
If you have not yet heard of MyFreeImplants, it's a website on which women can get "free" breast implants, by chatting with male "benefactors" who have to pay 1.20 per email with these women. (the website keeps the .20 cents, the women get the remainder) Most women's profiles feature lingerie, bathing suit, or even nude shots of them, to lure the donors to contact them. The female members can block men who harass them and don't need to give out any personal info at all on their profiles. Upon raising the amount needed for their surgery, a check goes to their plastic surgeon of choice, and all is finished.
So why is this America? Because, quite simply, it's a dizzying array of contradictions.
The women on the site have the power, even though it's the men who have the money, because the women can stop contact with the men, not give them any information they don't feel comfortable sharing, and chose who they will send what pictures to. Like countless business people before then, the women are exploiting those who have what they need. The men are horny, the women need bigger boobs. Indulge the balding 50 year old from Wisconsin by letting him think a 25 year old college student actually cares what he says.
However, I would bet my cats that no man on that site is joining out of the goodness of his heart. By giving money to these women and paying for their implants, each man essentially owns a little piece of that woman. He's turning her into his own little project, to become the perfect sex object. A banner at the bottom of the site shows a woman on her hands and knees. A coin drops onto her back, and her breasts grow, under which is the caption "Create the Perfect Girl at MyFreeImplants.com!"
It is a mutual exploitation game. The men get a feeling of power, of ownership over a perfect sex object, and they get their rocks off. The women use the men's desire to get what they want: breasts, big fake ones, for their job, their vanity, to please their significant other, or to reconstruct what cancer has destroyed. The women have power which is controlled by the men. The men have power which is checked by the women. Everyone is free and no one is free.
Not every woman gets her money, either. A less attractive woman will probably make less than an attractive one, since men chose to contact the women they find appealing. Those who fail fail, nothing is catching them. They can keep trying or give up. If they cannot compete, then c'est la vie. It's a very capitalist system of thought, sink or swim.
The degree of need is also to be questioned. For now, let's set aside the women who want breast implants because they had to have mastectomies. Now that they're out of the way, the other reasons for breast implants would seem to be: needing them for work (i.e. "modeling"), to fulfill their own vanity after losing breast volume or never having it to begin with, to find a partner, or to please their partner.
Needing them for a profession: The term "profession" is not really the right word, but it's being used loosely. There are no actual careers where large breasts are actually essential to performing the job, rather, large breasts are the ideal because men find them to be the ideal. (Well, some men do. I'm not a man-hater whatsoever, I just dislike certain types of both genders) So the need for implants for a job isn't actually a need, but just a want to succeed.
Vanity: Self-esteem is a good thing, it truly is, when it's genuine. What I mean by that is that self-esteem is good when it's based off of just feeling good about yourself regardless of how many people check you out or hit on you. If your self-esteem is based off of this, fake boobs will most likely help this. But beauty only lasts so long, and your self-esteem, if based on this, will then fade in time as well.
To find a partner/please your partner: While attraction is key to a healthy sexual relationship, love should be based on personality as well. If someone wouldn't look your way when you were a 32AA, then you sure as hell shouldn't date them when you expand to be a 32DD. And as far as pleasing a partner you already have goes, well, why undergo major elective surgery and pay tons of money (or whore yourself out for it) to please them, instead of them doing so to please you? The ends do not justify the means. Love is love and lust is lust, and if a lack of lust is ruining your love, then something is wrong.
So no women really need these implants (besides the mastectomy cases). Isn't that a very typical American thing? Dropping time and money on something which isn't really needed? Well, I think it is. As the Elle Magazine article entitled "Breast Buy" cleverly points out, the 5,000 dollars to buy a good set of implants could "three months’ worth of emergency medical supplies for almost 20,500 people in Darfur, according to UNICEF." At that point, define necessity.
This is America. We are contradictions, we love power, we exploit whatever and whomever we can, and we are social Darwinists. We also love big fake titties. Go figure.
